"This is creating enormous interest in both in schools and with families," says Catherine Scherer, author and president of Simon and Barklee, Inc. "Hispanic children are connecting with their own cultural roots and non-Hispanic children are discovering the fascinating diversity of Mexico."
The book follows the two travelers and their friend, Maria Dolores, an ocelot from Oaxaca, from the Copper Canyons to the Yucatan peninsula. As they travel, they learn history, geography, culture, language and more. The storybook is accompanied by an activities and materials for teachers.
"This is all about literacy," says Scherer. "Our books and programs focus on literacy in the academic sense – but also in the global sense. We want kids to discover and appreciate the world while they learn."
