Siemens Win £1.3m Contract To Take South Yorkshire Police Into The Future
by

SIEMENS Communications has won a £1.3m contract to deliver on South Yorkshire Police's ‘Communications for the Future' project that will give the force one central contact centre and help them provide a better service and achieve faster response times.
The project will bring together six different call centres in one multimedia contact centre that will receive both emergency and non-emergency calls, integrate with the new Airwave Radio technology when it's introduced and link into existing back-end systems such as the Command and Control systems and Crime Reporting.
South Yorkshire Police is one of the first forces to embark on such a radical change in the way that it communicates with both the public and its officers, Telecoms Manager Rob Robinson explained why they have chosen to go ahead: "In May 2001 when we developed the ‘Communication of the Future' project we identified that there was room to improve our service by centralising our communications. The new centre will route calls more effectively depending on priority and topic, and our operators will have all the resources they need at their finger-tips as well as better contact with officers in the field. We expect to see our response times and our service improve, for example calls reporting incidents will be handled much more quickly.
"With such a huge project and large budget at stake we had to employ a company that we could trust. We have been using Siemens switches for years so were aware of the excellent service they provided, but needed to be sure that they could deliver a complex project such as this, which they proved they could when we put the contract out to tender. It was clear that Siemens was the best option, it will build us a tailor-made solution and has proved to us that the technology will work."
Siemens are currently designing and developing the architecture and integration framework for the solution. The main call centre is based on Siemens HiPath ProCenter and Realitis switches, with the radio infrastructure being provided by CIM Systems and the back-office integration capability coming from Cavendish's InterAct.
Alison Hopkins, Business Development Consultant, said: "We have been developing our emergency services call handling proposition for some time now and it's great that we have got this high profile opportunity to show what we can do. Working with our partners I'm sure we are going to deliver an outstanding system to South Yorkshire Police, one that will help them deliver on all the targets set by the ‘Communications of the Future' project and that will grow with them and keep helping them to improve their service for years to come."
Superintendent Joe Royle added: "As a force it is very important that we keep looking at how we can improve in the future and we are all looking forward to the new centre coming on-line next February (2003).
"We also must ensure that we invest carefully in new technology and that improvements we make provide a real return on investment in terms of the service we provide to the public."
